Our Dogs

Kody, or Takoda as he is more formally known as (his name literally means friend to all and he certainly is!) is one special pup. He was found as an 8 week old stray, yes it happens a lot more than you'd imagine, in a large city and was taken in by animal control to see if his owners would claim him. No one ever showed up to claim him. Kody was also offered to two shelters but thought he would be 'too large' for their clientele to want to adopt. ARF's German Shepherd Rescue (http://www.arfrescue.com/) went to the animal control facility to get another dog for foster care (Gisa - the mother of our other 2 service dog candidates Basil & Lukas!) when the vet tech came out with Kody and said 'aren't you going to take this one too? Well who could refuse a face like that? Kody's 'history' as far as we knew it was that someone had just dumped him on the streets, he had been passed over for adoption twice and one of the shelters who was going to take him but had to decline at the last moment actually had a nasty virus break out and their dogs got extremely ill; some of them even died. So we at 2nd Chance think Kody was meant to come to us. He dodged dire circumstances several times in his journey to become a service dog in training. Kody seems to be an old soul in a young body; he already knows instinctively when to be calm, how to approach people, dogs,..in fact everyone who meets him just adores him. He is also really 'unique' in his lineage. He is what we call a FASSWC....we had a dna test done on him and it turns out he is a Flatcoated retriever (F), Afgahn Hound (A), Shibu Inu (S), , Shetland Sheep Dog (S), Whippet (W), Collie (C) mix. As this is very hard to remember we just say 'faswok" and it helps us recall his heinz 57 lineage! Anyway which way you look at it, we at 2nd Chance are very lucky to have found Kody. We're sure he'll make a great service dog for someone soon!
KODY HAS BEEN PLACED!!!!
BASIL HAS BEEN PLACED!!!!!
Lukas came to 2nd Chance in a very unexpected way. Lori, who also runs ARF's German Shepherd Rescue, got a phone call from her foster home Angela. We had suspected for a while that Gisa (the shepherd we took from animal control) might be pregnant but everyone kept saying no...so we went with the expert opinion. We were very surprised when Gisa delivered 9 puppies on 5/25/08! (what a surprise for everyone, especially Angela who actually had to help birth the pups in her kitchen! She and Gisa did a terriffic job and all pups were healthy!) They are shepherd/lab mixes and there were 7 boys and 2 girls in all (including his brother Basil who has already been placed))
Lucy: Lucy has been placed !!!
